Past CEO, Southwest Airlines and Braniff International
Southwest Airlines changed the way the game is played in the airline industry, with a vision to democratize air travel, making it affordable to people who typically traveled by bus or automobile, or not at all. How did Southwest do it? Almost everyone knows the Southwest Airlines story —it’s an enduring case study of how a clear vision of “why” not “what” drives strategy and tactics, and in the process creates a culture that clearly differentiates an organization. The strategy resulted in a set of highly defined disciplines —influencing everything from the type of planes they flew to their boarding process to the type of people they hired — all with a specific purpose. In the process, they became the most consistently profitable and reliable airline in the world, posting profits even during the Great Recession, and always with excellent customer reviews. Every industry is going through cycles and change. We are in the era of “game” changing. Come here Howard Putnam’s take on this era.
Howard Putnam is the former CEO of the highly successful Southwest Airlines. Later, when recruited to be the CEO of failing Braniff International, Howard Putnam was the 1st CEO to successfully restructure a major airline into, through, and out of Chapter 11. He has been an entrepreneur and has served as a director of several startup technology companies. He is an author, speaker and advisor on business issues, change, leadership and ethics.
